Beginning in the month of May I will be running a series of evidence-based trauma intervention treatment groups. The groups will run for 10 sessions, inclusive of two parent / caregiver sessions (one at the beginning to familiarize them with the program) and one at the end during which time the child will share their workbook with them and "tell them their story" through their art. I have observed this to be a tremendously impactful process.
Pending sufficient interest / registration groups will begin the first week of May and will run through to the last week of June. Sessions will be held in St. Catharines, and will be 60 minutes in duration. Group size will be limited to 4 participants.
Treatment focus areas:
- Bereavement
- Abuse
- Domestic Violence Exposure
- Separation and Divorce
Each of the programs I use are developed by the National Centre for Trauma and Loss in Children, and are based upon structured sensory intervention. Their programs have undergone extensive field testing and have been verified as having content validity and demonstrated reliability among the clinicians that tested them. Groups are based on a combined model of brief-therapy exposure, art, and CBT techniques using sensory activation and cognitive restructuring as the foundation. Each session has a theme that allows the child / youth to tell their story through drawing and trauma specific questioning followed by cognitive reframing to normalize their experiences and allow for reframing. The main theme is that of safety and regaining a sense of control which is central to each of the sessions. However, some of the specific themes explored include: fear, anger, worry, hope, empowerment etc. These programs are adaptable to respond to specific trauma experiences such as domestic violence exposure, sexual abuse, physical abuse, bereavement etc.
*The registration fee for all 10 sessions is $150. Subsidy is available as required. Register online using the "group registration" tab. Please contact Lori at (905) 341-3290 to request further information.
